Mortal Kombat II is several months away from debuting in theaters, but a producer is already speaking about a third movie in the new cinematic series. Mortal Kombat premiered in US theaters in 2021, and was a modest success. Warner Bros. Pictures, the distributor of the first movie, greenlit a sequel. These films are adaptations of the namesake video-game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.
Todd Garner says Mortal Kombat 3 can happen if part 2 ‘does well enough’
Todd Garner, a producer attached to the Mortal Kombat film series, revealed that the feedback from the first movie had helped shape the second one. Notably, the 2021 feature currently has a 55% approval rating on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes.
Garner added that he and his collaborators hoped that they could add more sequels and spin-offs to the franchise. He told FutureBoyWho2, “Now, realize, we’re hoping that this is not the end of the franchise. So, this is not like we’re just doing this movie and this is going to be it, hopefully.”
Garner mentioned that they had long-term plans for certain characters. “We have a plan further down the line for things,” he said, using Hiroyuki Sanada’s Hanzo Hasashi becoming Scorpion in the first movie and the transformation of Joe Taslim’s Bi-Han into Noob Saibot in the sequel as examples. He continued, “Those characters have evolved. I know everybody’s waiting for Kano to get the metal plate in his eye. That will happen.”
The producer clarified that nothing is ultimately “set in stone” as the franchise continues to expand. “If we’re allowed to do further movies, hopefully this one does well enough, there’s chances to do other things, spinoffs, another sequel to propel the story, bring in different characters, and evolve the characters that we already have,” he said.
In the same interview, Garner teased that Rain, a fan-favorite character from the games, could appear in the prospective third movie.
Mortal Kombat II premieres in US theaters on October 24, 2025.
