While Thunderbolts* showcased two of the most enthralling post-credits scenes in recent MCU history, director Jake Schreier has now revealed that he had planned for an alternate end-credits sequence that failed to make the final cut. In a recent interview, the renowned filmmaker stated that he had almost finalized a completely different scene for the conclusive moments of his MCU project, which would have featured David Harbour’s Red Guardian.
Jake Schreier reveals Red Guardian’s cut post-credits scene in Thunderbolts*
While speaking with ComicBookMovie.com‘s Josh Wilding, Schreier noted that he had planned for an alternate post-credits scene for Thunderbolts*, that would’ve featured a particularly funny anecdote from the past of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova.
Talking about the comedic presence of Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov, Schreier noted, “I mean, Alexei is just so fun. I mean, you could come up with post-credits scenes for Alexei all day.” He then described a different Thunderbolts* post-credits scene that he had ideated, stating, “I think we did have one other idea that maybe it could be the VHS home video of the soccer game with Mindy, and that might be fun; the chaos of that going back in time. But I don’t know. This is just where we landed.”
The sequence explained by Schreier alludes to an incident from Yelena’s past, as narrated by her during the titular group’s escape from Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s secret bunker. According to Yelena, she was part of a Little League soccer team, named West Chesapeake Valley Thunderbolts, during her childhood days. Coached by her adoptive father, Alexei Shostakov, the team was infamous for never recording a single victory. Additionally, the squad also featured a girl named Mindy, who, in one match, ended up defecating in the middle of the field.
Instead, the first of the two Thunderbolts* post-credits scenes saw David Harbour’s Red Guardian convincing a customer to buy a box of Wheaties that featured him and his teammates on the cover. Meanwhile, the second end-credits scene of the film announced the arrival of the Fantastic Four in the MCU, directly setting up the events of Avengers: Doomsday.
